The nice thing about booking a snorkeling or diving excursion is that some of them will involve a boat ride to the reef and you will get to have a scenic boat ride at the same time. Even if you just want to rent or bring along some snorkeling gear you will want to check out these pristine waters at one of the many coral reef locations. Some of the downtown area can get crowded with cars and people, but if you want to venture out on your own renting a bike might be a good option. If you don’t want to have to work too much electric scooters area available too.

As we said, the island sits just 11 miles across the water from the Mexican mainland and the town of Playa del Carmen. All three Cozumel cruise ship terminals have wheelchair access. The only public transportation option is the local ferry from Playa del Carmen, which is air-conditioned and runs from the early morning to late at night. There are no major roads in the north of the island, however.

There are so many things to do that it’s tough to decide the best things to do in Cozumel, especially when you only have one day in port. For a $20 admission fee, you get access to a lot of fun at the beach at the San Francisco Beach Club. Your day at the beach includes an umbrella, lounger, bathrooms, pool, snorkel gear, wi-fi and more. The park has a small beach sloping to the water that’s ideal for smaller kids, but most of the shore is rocky and requires steps to go down to snorkel. If you aren’t docked at the International Pier, then you won’t be able to access this area. What most people don’t realize, however, is that just because Cozumel is an island doesn’t mean you are always close to a postcard-worthy beach.

You can get a casual, relaxing dining experience at one of the many eateries along the beach or try something more upscale. Both International Pier and Puerta Maya are about 3 miles from San Miguel, but it is a safe and scenic walk to the downtown area which I have done a few times. Taxis are cheap, but if you have extra time the walk is doable. To try and do many of the best things to do in Cozumel on a cruise, you really need to maximize your time.

The distance is easily walkable (~30 min), and most pleasant as it is along the waterfront promenade. If the lines of disembarking passengers waiting for taxis are long, you can exit the pier, walk toward El Cid La Ceiba Hotel and catch a taxi on the street there. Sometimes, ships will have to anchor just offshore if it’s a very busy day with 7 or 8 cruise ships coming in. In these cases the ships will tender passengers to some of the smaller piers near Puerta Maya. The International Pier is three miles south, and then Puerta Maya is the furthest outside of town, nearly five miles away. From Puerta Maya, it’s too far to walk into town, but you’re closer to the beach clubs.
